Maple Mesquite Seasoning

As our days get busier, we are far more likely to reach for pre-packaged mixes and other convenience foods to lighten our load and make dinner prep a bit easier. These are some of my favorite homemade Kitchen Heroes you can make in advance and keep handy for those extra-hectic evenings… or even the non-hectic ones. Work smarter, not harder!

Mesquite (Prosopis pallida) has a long history of traditional use by indigenous cultures in South America and Mexico. The plant has been used for a variety of purposes, including food, medicine and fuel.

Mesquite pods are rich in antioxidants like vitamin C and contain anti-inflammatory properties that make it useful in treating respiratory issues such as bronchitis, coughs and asthma. Mesquite pods can be ground into a fine powder and used in baking or teas or… spice blends.

This maple-mesquite seasoning is so versatile. A bit smoky, a bit sweet and it has just the right amount of everything. If you tried making your own smoked salt, this is the perfect place to use it!

It makes a great rub for grilled meats and an all-purpose seasoning for roasted vegetables, potatoes, pot roast, scrambled eggs, even popcorn.

Combine it with olive oil and vinegar to make a sweet-n-smokey salad dressing.
